Engineering Leaders is proud to be Serious Social Play Certified with Pod & Hive's group dynamic simulations.
Different to gamification, or solo play (which tends to be perfectible), serious social play incorporates deliberate intent to learn from the simulated environment, is customisable to desired learning objectives, and is inherently repeatable - every game is different due to the uncertainty and tensions that exist in every group. |
Leadership is a social exercise - as such leadership must be learned in a social environment. Simulation allows:

Grimsby's Code
The twin challenges of organisational performance - Getting Things Done (agency) and Getting Along with Others (communion) - come alive in this high energy simulation.
Teams begin the game with incomplete information, tough goals and a lack of resources, and then must struggle, haggle and trade their way to the highest catch of fish they can. But there is a “catch” - they must also win the endorsement of the other teams in the room to pass both goals...
Will your people burn relationships to achieve their goals? Will they go soft on goals to keep everyone happy? Or can they do both?
This Pod&Hive simulation thrusts participants into the turbulence of rapid assimilation of information, inter and intra team tensions and the need to make decisions, get things done, and be held accountable for the way they do it. Reinforced by rigorous debrief, this immersive themed experience will challenge your team to work well together, and with others, and leave them reflecting on their leadership style.

The Dragons are Coming
This Pod&Hive simulation tests a timeless tension between pursuing local opportunity and advantage versus contributing to a wider collective goal. It has a rigorous basis in the mathematics of game theory and the social economics of the Tragedy of the Commons.
The Dragons represent an external threat we all have to rally against - but do we all have to contribute equally? Will we be rewarded equally? Throw in the opportunity ti indulge in a little subterfuge and opportunism, and suddenly collaboration looks a little harder than we thought.
The Dragons Are Coming simulation gives participants a real-time experience of the difficulty of influencing without authority and leading across boundaries, and explores the tension between local or personal KPIs and group performance.

First Responder
Simple to play, yet hard to master, FIrst Responder pits your team against a volatile viral challenge. Your people will get first hand experience of how the unexpected can mess with event the best laid plans. But they still must plan and execute to be successful. Your teams will need to balance the urgent and immediate against the important but longer term: neglect the urgent and you might end up in quarantine, fail to master the important and the viruses will win.
Developed prior to COVID-19, yet hard on the heels of our collective experience of the global pandemic, this time you get the opportunity to beat the pandemic yourself.
This Pod & Hive simulation will test a team’s ability to manage a response to a complex and evolving problem. The problem landscape is uneven – it will affect some teams more than others – and the challenge is volatile and in constant flux. Teams will need to balance short term crisis management with longer term goals, and adapt their strategies and tactics and coordinate their resources across multiple teams to have any chance of beating the viruses.

Woodland Critters
Woodland Critters brings a new perspective to the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) conversation by locating it squarely in a commercial pressure environment. Teams each start the challenge with a monoculture composed of a single creature type. In order to win the challenge, they'll need to bring other creatures into their clan and develop them into Elders. But it won't be easy - some of the creatures don't like each other.
This Pod & Hive simulation gives participants a real-time experience of the difficulties of building a diverse team, along with the ultimate benefits it brings. As they build themselves a clan to win the Woodlands Challenge they will wheel and deal, and try to develop their critters, keep them happy and help them feel they belong. Participants will come away with a simple, practical understanding of what diversity, equity and inclusion mean in everyday business.
The game is played in real time either face to face or virtually. Participants are placed into random (or preset) teams to build their clans, to haggle and trade with other teams, to compete for new talent and try to grow their clan. In a room full of energy, healthy competition and fun, your DEI conversation has never been this engaging!
